Skype said Thursday that its WiFi phones for VoIP calling will be available in the third quarter. The devices will allow Skype users to use the voice service anywhere WiFi is available. WiFi phones are coming on the market for Skype's VoIP service in the third quarter, enabling customers to access their Skype service when away from their PCs. The phones are initially available through Skype.com. Skype software has been incorporated into WiFi phones by multiple manufacturers including Belkin, Edge-Core, Netgear and SMC, Skype officials announced Thursday. Skype users can now use the voice service where WiFi is available, including in-home and in-office wireless networks as well as hot spots and municipal service offerings. "We want to give people the freedom to move around while talking and have access to Skype wherever they are -- whether in front of a computer or while moving around the home or office," said Stefan Oberg, general manager, hardware for Skype, in a prepared statement. "Now people can make wireless Internet calls and enjoy the great Skype cost savings and sound quality free of a computer." The software comes preloaded on the phones, which feature an easy-to-use interface, Skype officials said. The service will work on any WiFi network that doesn't require browser authentication, and will support multiple WiFi security protocols, including WiFi encryption protocols including WEP, WPA, and WPA2 with PSK support.
