Increase in RFID uptakeBy: Adfero Ltd, 2006-10-30 Viewed: 2440 times Printed: 104 times Emailed: 95 times
The uptake of RFID projects is becoming more prevalent as prices drop and
legislation eases, according to reports.
Ultra high frequency (UHF) chips have recently undergone legislative changes and the chip price has lowered from 53p to 5p. Costing and the time spent implementing an RFID scheme is seemingly no longer a major factor and could therefore signal a new rush for RFID. Otto Kilb, strategic business development manager for Printronix, told Manufacturing Computer Solutions: "With the licensing changes it has become easier to use UHF chips, which cost less, are more reliable and work over a wider range. "This is not necessarily an alternative to barcoding, but a complement. Too many companies believe that it’s either one or the other without realising you can now have the benefits of RFID as well as the benefits of barcoding as well." A number of large global retailers have begun implementing RFID programmes, with Wal-Mart leading the way in the US retail sector. TUV Product Service, part of the TÜV SÜD Group of companies with 1bn Euros turnover, in excess of 9,500 employees and 500 locations worldwide, is a leading provider of Compliance and Assurance Solutions for the RFID sector.
